Whats New with My Site?

The current B.C. record Largemouth is 8.5 pounds out of Vaseux Lake by Dean Ostrowechka.  Although larger have been recorded this is the biggest recorded.  The current smallmouth record is 6.5 pounds out of Osoyoos Lake by Wayne Williams.  If you catch a bigger one just take note of as much info about it as you can and make sure you have a witness and photographs.  Go to www.wcba.com and email the guys if you think you have a record.  Try Elk and Spider Lake on Vancouver Island for a new possible smallmouth record.  Try Duck and Vaseux Lakes in the interior for a potential new largemouth record.  Skaha and Osoyoos Lake also hold big smallies, and Osoyoos and Fishtrap Creek hold big largemouth.

Bass Tip of the Week

Finesse Fishing

Sometimes bass just don't want to chase lures, sometimes they hardly even want to bite.  In a recent trip to Osoyoos Lake for the annual WCBA May tournament, we ran into a tough bite on Saturday morning.  Smallmouth bass were on beds but were easily spooked and tough to get a bite out of.  Seemed every lure we threw was just a little too big or fast moving for them.  Fortunately my fishing partner Shawn and I found a solution.  Finesse worms.  When we found a bed with a good fish on it we backed off about 30 feet and casted small finesse worms and grubs onto the nest and waited for a slight tick signalling a bite.  We ended up culling 7 times the first day and 10 on the second.  We probably caught 30-40 fish total, and had a 35 lb 12 oz 2 day total stringer.  Drop-shot rigs also worked well.  Look for next week's article on the drop-shot rig.
